Controlled Burn ☠️

Controlled Burn (the Philosophy of Ascension)

Introduction -

1) The Doctrine of Self-Will
2) Defining Heretic Supremacy
3) Pearls to Swine
4) The Scent of War and Women.

The shores of space shall not define Nor walls thrown up enclose our vault, And as if borne from distant stars We rage against the bastion of That which is still unshattered.

Greetings. Many desires, so I've finally decided to issue a second publication. A second? Indeed. In fact, many readers may not be familiar with my previous writings in "The Conqueror Manifesto: Capricornus Teitan", published by Of God's Disgrace in 1996. "The Conqueror Manifesto" was the culmination of years of research and writing, and was hailed as both brilliant and iconoclastic by those who read it. And now "Controlled Burn (the Philosophy of Ascension)", published by Kampfrune Press.

This shorter booklet is designed as both a precursor to and a follow-up to the aforementioned book. "Controlled Burn" contains some more recent writings, in "Pearls to Swine" and "The Scent of War and Women", as well as some material already covered in "The Conqueror Manifesto". However, the shape that both "Defining Heretic Supremacy" and "The Doctrine of Self-Will" take here is a vast improvement over their initial debut in the "Manifesto". I have chosen to include them for two reasons: to provide a sample of the ideology and philosophy presented in the "Manifesto" (for those unable or unwilling to obtain it), and because I am much more satisfied with their format and clarity in "Controlled Burn". For those who already adhere to the ideas espoused

herein, or who are swayed by them, I strongly urge that you continue down the path of Heretic Supremacy. "The Conqueror Manifesto" delves into far greater detail than any of the aphorisms contained in "Controlled Burn" attempt. And with reason: this booklet was meant as a proselytizing or introduction tool, while the "Manifesto" fleshes out the statements into being. And thus does the Conqueror proclaim:

"Surge forth towards new horizons, racing your hoofs across the rocks: the zenith knows only the limits that are placed upon it!"

- Peter G. Helmkamp, April 1999.

-------The Doctrine of Self-Will-------

1) This is for the true Rebellious Spirits of unfettered Pride, who follow the Way of their own making! This evocation of Strength & Wisdom is for those who hail the Conquering Ones!

2) We are Supremacists: we strive for Strength & Wisdom! We acknowledge the inner godhead, and follow our Self-Will! Those that miss the mark should be allowed to fall - should be encouraged to fall these vermin who would be of no help to us.

3) We anchor our Supremacy in our actions and our deeds, in our Knowledge and Power, in the National! Only with this bold base of support can we begin to accomplish our goals.

4) We are Heretics: the champions of free will. Not merely individuals' who follow an alternate path, but true Conquerors who, through the courage of their convictions, stand their ground in the face of despair.

5) Will is the key: Will opens the portal towards the new Dawn. Unfettered force, boldly unleashed to whip the masses into compliance that is true Heretical Will!

6) We are Conquerors: our Supremacy and Heretical action will summon the ire of many who would oppose us. And we have one reply - crush them! We have no time for compromise, there is no place for the half-hearted! Those who truly deserve can and will unite with us - but for the others we offer only enslavement.

7) The Strong rule the Weak and the Wise rule the Strong - this shall be our reason for existence, it can be no other way. This is the healthy manner in on which Nature guides herself, this is evolution.

8) Suffering begets survival, or death. Those that weather the frozen winds of winter emerge into a new world every spring a realm of life and nourishment with room for expansion and reason for procreation. This is Nature's reward to the fittest - the opportunity to go it again, to conquer the summerlands and populate them with an even stronger breed!

9) We are not afraid: Fear is the worm that gnaws at a weak man's heart - we have no place for it.

10) We Conquer the Fear, we strike it down, for we know its true worth: Fear allows the greater to manipulate the lesser, for it breeds irrationality and ignorance the two great enslavers.

11) Respect, rather than Fear, those powers greater than yourself: learn from everything that makes them so, for one day it will become necessary to dethrone them!

12) We Heretic Supremacists laugh: those who oppose us certainly feel the Fear deep in their chests. Can you hear their lamentations? Yet those pathetic creatures who cry the loudest accomplish the least for those who cry the loudest do so as their last resort!

13) Acknowledge this Heretic Supremacist doctrine of Self-Will: placate on bended knee neither man nor god, and remain free from any manner of servitude. Forever heighten the Creative attributes of Strength, Wisdom: worship the Self to reach the ideals one has chosen. The daimon erect - I am He!

------Defining Heretic Supremacy------

For the past twenty centuries, a horrible stigma has been attached to the Western mind that of Judeo-christianity. It has seeped into every crevice of our daily lives and remains there like a festering cancer. The Judeo-christian plague represents the human individual as weak, powerless, even cowardly. It strips you, the individual person, of all potential Strength & Wisdom, so that in the depths of despair, your total loss of relationship with the Self propels you to a blind faith in an external force: 'God'. This in turn creates the ignorant sheep that is ripe for manipulation.

Heretic Supremacy, following the example set forth by German philosopher and classical scholar Friedrich Nietzsche, proclaims the death of the Judeo-christian 'God', thus acknowledging our belief in the dualistic union of Strength & Wisdom; the Self. This Conqueror of Fear owes allegiance not to the rotten fabric of an obsolete alien religion forced on the West, but to something that he can solidly and proudly embrace. This Conqueror is He who establishes himself within himself, who controls the elements that make up his own being. This Conqueror is He who washes his hands of the contamination and recreates the world to his own liking! Opponents of this prideful and Self-empowering action will cry that we Conquerors of Fear, having 'lost' our belief in 'God', have therefore lost their foundation of 'morality' as well. Correction: we have permanently disposed of their moral illness!

This is order from chaos: an overcoming of the Self, a dawning of a stronger and wiser being. The Conqueror of Fear sits at the center of the Universe, His Horus head representative of the New Dawn, silhouetted by the black chaos sun, a circle at odds with the center, yet still linked to the four tiered (elemental) Earth atop which He stands (this being the Fifth, the Plateau). From the protoplasmic core, from which all things came and to what we all resolve (the simple nothingness of a nihilistic order), is derived the ebb and flow of the dual natures contained within. Within and without, Ouroboros (the dragon-snake that bites its own tail) is time and its continuing rush ever onwards, it is Draconis the Chaos Serpent of ancient times (the watery abyss - birth) and the Serpent of the Garden who imparted Knowledge of the Self, and therefore Strength & Wisdom and the Key to Glory. In these truths must we submerge our-Selves, allowing Quintessence (the Fifth Element, the perfection of Five - the Pentacle) to bathe our swooning forms.

After all, how can one not perceive with bitter disillusionment that human reason is powerless to justify one moral value over another, hence the swineherd's fatal addiction to religious dogma and self-destructive external obeisance? What are these 'morals' that the enemies of Heretic Supremacy so revere? Nothing but lies, compounded upon each other for centuries, so etched in our existence that we must fight even in the subconscious. So ingrained that nothing has any value, and only the might of force and violence can decide what is right.

We Heretic Supremacists must now find the courage ourselves to become gods in a world without 'God' - to conquer Fear and ascend towards the Plateau of Invincibility. The greatest need of civilization now is to develop a new type of individual, a Conqueror who will be hard, strong, courageous, and who will be intellectually and morally free. One who will break the stone slabs on which the old Judeo-christian moral laws are inscribed, the old life-denying moral laws to which the masses are still enslaved. The only morality of the Conqueror will be to affirm life: to be powerful, creative, joyous, and free. And as Nietzsche again counsels, this Ascendance should arise "our of my will to be in good health, out of my will to live... selfpreservation forbade me to practice a philosophy of wretchedness and discouragement."

We Heretic Supremacists must begin anew, we must have a rebirth. The coming millennium should be the genesis of something powerful and substantial on which a progressive people can base their lives. Ours shall be the first generation to cast aside the Judeo-christian curse of lackluster will and self-deceit, and with this blight eradicated, each successive generation will be endowed with that much more real history and experience. The Dawn of a new Age is upon us, but without the final fall of the old order, without the total cleansing of the morass into which we are currently sinking, nothing will change. The cyclical evolution of Nature demands the virtues of creation through destruction, of order from chaos, of the rise and fall of civilizations, and of the weak and obsolete falling prey to the most-able.

It is time to develop a Self-mastery that is the antithesis of Judeo-christian 'norms' such as charity, mercy, and egalitarianism. This Self-Mastery is the balance of both Strength & Wisdom - a discipline of polarities. Through the rigors of Overcoming, we may conquer the Judeo-christian alien self and through extreme exertions of Will achieve the highest level of performance heretofore trapped behind "moral" confines.

We must find the measure of all things again, the measure of the macrocosm and microcosm, the solar system above us and the world within us, the world we see in the microscope. Only then will we receive the proper sense of proportion about what surrounds us, and how we are integrated into this eternal cycle

We are falling in and march, according to unalterable laws, along the road into a distant future, bound by our unbreakable Bond and our Conquering Spirit. We want to believe that we are not only to be the grandchildren, who have carried on more successfully than the fathers, but also the ancestors of later generations essential for the eternal life of Heretic Supremacy. Our Self-Mastery, the Overcoming and Ascendance-Deliverance of the Conquerors of which we speak, is principally this:

1) The inner affirmation of struggle, even under the most difficult conditions.

2) The courage to face up to every eventuality without flinching. 2 Determination (not discouragement) in 3 the face of all reverses.

3) Our goal: Quintessential Strength & Wisdom. The way through Heretic Supremacy. The unbreakable Bond: Brotherly comradeship. Remember: above one's own advantage stands our victory.

4) At work or play, be hard and fair. Unleash iron discipline against those who so deserve.

5) Preserve iron self-discipline respecting Brothers. Always retain the lycanthropic instinct. Never evade a decision. Never back down. Show modesty in victory. Accept defeat without excuses. Learn from your mistakes. The cause of your defeat rests solely at your doorstep.

6) Remain true to the Eternal Quest.

7) Remain pure and whole.

8) The nature of Heretic Supremacy is this Eternal Quest for greater Strength & Wisdom. European Renaissance society viewed the combination of both Strength & Wisdom as necessary for true understanding and enlightenment, as did the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is the balance of 'opposites', the juxtaposition and interplay of diametric poles that yields true creative Self-Mastery and the Spark that kindles the Ast'r AST'R: arya serpent theos race (noble wise god race) - the Conquerors/Homodeus (man as god). Not a genetically distinct race as such, but the culmination of the efforts of the flame.

We torch-bearers of Reason and Progress form an elite: in order to carry the Banner of Heretic Supremacy, the Eternal Quest becomes a permanently fixed doctrine in our Promethean body-mind-soul.

Within our circle, comrade educates comrade and all should gain from all. The very nature of the Quest states that there is no end in sight, that there are no limitations. Always conduct oneself in adherence with our Conquering Spirit, and never forget that we have great tasks to perform. We are a tribe, a clan, a community: a knighthood from which one cannot resign and within which we remain with body-mind-soul as long as we walk this earth.

We are the Conquerors of Fear who have propelled the elite Ast'r through history, heaping glory upon glory on our eternal Faustian souls. When necessary, we have been Wolves in Sheep's clothing, standing among but apart from the human fray, but other times we have stood in rank with our Brothers, sillouhetted against the horizon. From the dawn of man to the coming Age, we have stood out amongst the fallen. With Self-Mastery and Vengeance we shout into the star shattered Dawn: "the beholden Spirit of Destiny - I am He!"

Homodeus acting in union. Also Latin, 'aster'; star (of the Microcosm, of the Conquerors).

------- Pearls to Swine ------

1) The world is in perpetual decay. Even words: first upon conception in the mind they seem so brilliant and unique, and when borne upon the lips into the exterior, for a moment yes earth shattering - moving mountains and fantastic thunderclaps. And just as suddenly there we are back again: yet another snowfall to slowly melt, yet another sandbar washed downstream, a beach smashed by breaking waves. In this eternal rot nothing can so satisfy the eating away of it all. The inextricable nature of the hunger - this doom - is only made bearable by song and lyric, by portrait, painting and sculpture, by that which captures the instant. All else is as a moth in the face of a gale force northern wind.

2) The idea of peace, that is a world without conflict, is folly. It is completely irresponsible to treat so called peacetime as anything other than a breathing space - a valuable period of time in which to refit, rearm, rethink and reevaluate the struggle at hand. Peace is merely the condition immediately following the fighting - a post or inter war lull - during which one prepares for the next.

3) If you acknowledge your enemy as an adder, with cunning wit and deadlier venom, then the logical means of victory for any confrontation is to step on his head to crush and kill. If you are negligent in this task, or if you injure to the edge of death, and then, through some foolhardy fog of compassion, take this serpent into your fold in the name of the supposedl brotherhood of man, you throw your winnings to the winds. For once you nurse him back to health, you can expect nothing more than to be bitten.

4) Fellow man: neither fellow' nor 'man'. A despicable dog I say of three varieties: a means to an end; an obstacle in one's path to be overcome; or a lone wolf, like yourself, who can be engaged in a mutually parasitic relationship. Both parties being respectfully aware of the other's reciprocal attributes, thus acknowledging the need for such a temporary union so that each may push forward on the shoulders of the other. A powerful symbiotic partnership, albeit not without a measure of mutual contempt, through which the fierce competition and combination of the energies at hand benefit both participants.

5) have the dreams of common men at times. I dream of a face in an abyss: bestial yet familiar, a horrid personification of the failures, weaknesses and shortcomings that could be. A portent of a could be that is becoming: of realities so far from flattering that what begins as frightening makes the sickness rise in the belly. At times the visage from the vortex speaks, and I plummet screaming into the miasma of the sins of the many, of the pitfalls of the blind. Other times I purge and vomit, and the stench of nausea fires my brain. I am the gazing in, not the leering out the face in the abyss shall not usurp my all-being! And then with speed I journey from that place, but its impression. lags not far behind. Like the sharp reek of bile still scarring my nostrils, I shall not forget. Being wary of all and any grotesques lying in wait on any future paths, I forge ahead with even stronger purpose, for I know now what might have been.

6) The human animal has an innate propensity to destroy. Instinctual and merciless, clever and pitiless, the deeds of all men are based on a selfish will towards their own individual godhood, at the expense of all others. It is time to fully express this - our true and noble nature - in thought, word and deed. The enslavement of endearments, the infamy of compassion, and the cowardice of appeasement - no longer will we endure the visitations of these plagues. Whether this state is reached through training and indoctrination, or from the collapse of this so called society in which we dwell, the thin veneer of what is known as civilization must be stripped away and discarded. We shall cultivate the fierce, and to some the monstrous, and this feral man will journey joyously towards onslaught. A guttural laugh of victory emerging from his throat - the shout of defiance into the storm of steel.

7) The essence of a child is to stray: to discover knowledge selfishly and individually, devoid of any guidance save his own. Thus the iconoclast - an alternate yet respected bearer of knowledge, affinity and admiration, and representative of everything that parents are not - is the true educator of children. This rebel captain acts as a surrogate for familial tutelage, particularly in reference to that which goes beyond the norm; that which has been forbidden. Therefore, any lessons parents attempt to pass on to their offspring - morals, ideals, tradition ultimately fall short because of the very nature of their source. Only one voice will persist: that of he who walks upstream, he who fights alone against the many. His instruction will overtake all others, and before long, the damage will be beyond repair.

8) Action is always and everything: hard work and perseverance are to be commended, laziness and pessimistic acceptance forcibly remedied, and dull stasis put to death.

9) When one's retinue departs it is for two reasons: either their ears are no longer worthy of your words, or your words are not worth their time.

10) In all this time, it seems as if I have accumulated nothing. Indeed. It is however not about accumulation, but accomplishment.

11) Despite the fact that many men possess the capabilities to forge a path of their own making, most simply acquiesce to the majority's way of thinking and acting: they gravitate towards the lowest common denominator. Why? Because they can.

12) A weakness common among men is the willingness - the almost expedient ease - towards compromise and appeasement of their fellow man in regards to even the smallest conflict. In this respect, the stalwart truly stands head and shoulders above the rest - when he is right.

13) Why hope for the impossible when one can strive for the attainable?

14) Those truths that can be perceived as such become that in fact. Those that are overwhelmed are drowned: as falsehoods at worst, as irrelevant at best. It becomes clear that of the multiple choices of understanding and comprehension, men regard as truth only that which is offered them.

15) Failure is the willful intention not to succeed.

16) The inner discipline of self is the core of resistance against exterior stimuli. Yet how many of us are truly willing to embark on an incursion into our inner soul, to seek what lies within our silent minds? Could the effects of anesthetics, stimulants, and even hallucinogens be harvested from dormant gray matter by exercising one's mental prowess over so-called "reality? It certainly seems possible. By overtly pushing physical being and spatial status onto a secondary plane, one allows the power of the mind, and all its huge vistas of yearning. to become the more dominant of the two. Pain can be eradicated, sleep withstood, visions awakened, and the seemingly last reserve of strength tapped again and again! This is accomplished not by drugs, but through the concept of mind over body, of mental dominance over falsely imposed physical barriers and previously accepted normalities. The choice of discovery is yours: welter in futility and waste at the expense of your own self-advancement or establish new laws applicable to a new being!

17) When one teaches certain things to the young, it is not with the intent of their enjoyment, but with the intent that later in life, upon reflection, they know to appreciate what has been impressed upon them.

18) When sincerely rising above, it must be an actual ascension beyond one's previous mark, not merely a result of other's increasing decay.

19) Concerning one's dealings with those of a superior nature, it is necessary to regard them in these ways: respect, aspiration, and the trusting nobility to become a tool for their greater and perhaps unfathomable good.

20) The rat that questions and rationalizes its own instinct: man.

21) It has been stated that it is always darkest before the dawn. And so I question: what exactly is stopping us from snuffing all the light?

22) A simple lesson: to reckon with the knowledge that it is often necessary to burn the village in order to save it. And to loose that which resides within the heart of every man: the glad stirrings of genocide.

23) Perhaps what we need is not one mass conflagration, but ten thousand tiny lucifers, ten thousand matches straining to burst into flame. For despite all efforts to prevent the spread - and ultimate unity of the fires, it would be impossible to extinguish them all.

24) Burn, burn, burn I say, and from the cooling ashes, mix with drippings from the blooded blade, into clay. And on the potter's wheel mold, not a likeness of, but a true god in mind, spirit and body.

25) And not because of who we were, but for what we have set in motion for what has become. Come blessed earthshakers and those who shatter worlds: our kingdom has arrived.

26) To conquer or to gather? That becomes the absolute question. And the answer? To stumble and fail at greatness is far more noble than to grovel for the crumbs of another's feast.

27)Whether I am laying the seeds that take one thousand years to gestate and bear fruit, or whether my words are the lightning strike that boldly transforms the next decade, I care not. Only that they are heeded, understood, and necessarily put into practice by someone at sometime.

28) The most glorious joy: not a will be, but an is.

----The The Scent of War and Women----

1) Some days it seems that all those who surround me have their backs turned - where it seemed there were ears, there is only ignorance. A deafness unintentional, but there nonetheless. And thus my words and example go unheeded. And at other times it seems as if all are turned towards me, but only the storm of sharpening blades can be heard as they prepare to take me to the slaughterhouse. And thus my words and example go unheeded. And some days it seems to me that I was born either half a century too early or half a century too late: that I am speaking to people long since buried or to youth not yet born. And thus my words and example go unheeded.

2) Existence is struggle, is conflict, is warfare. We must constantly fight, not only for that which we wish to obtain, but also in order to preserve that which we have. Every day offers another challenge - another battle to fight and win - and every man around you is a potential ally or foe. Some are better warriors than others, some are better generals, and some are merely pawns... And all around are the carcasses of war: those who have been defeated and remained defeated. For defeat is normally only a stepping back, but not a stopping. However, those who have chosen to accept their setbacks as the norm - in effect refusing to fight - are nothing more than the walking dead. And we fighters should only look on with pitiless eyes, for it is their chosen fate: feeble shadows of men drowning in seas of opportunity, thrown about like the useless driftwood they have become.

3) What is it about the sickling that is so irritating to the healthy? Because their ailments are mostly in their heads! All of us have had mornings where one doesn't feel superb, or days when the muscles ache, or when fatigue weighs heavy on every step, but the healthy shrug it off and make the best of it - they fight through that which would drag them down. The sickling however uses every possible chance to shirk responsibility, to avoid a struggle, and even talks himself into the malady - but here I must make one thing clear, for it is rather a 'she' than a 'he': it is not unjust to say that the majority of sicklings are women.

4) When raindrops become a thunderstorm, and a slight breeze a hurricane; when a chill in the air is undoubtedly arctic, and the rays of the sun are both blinding and burning; when a flight of stairs becomes a mountain - and a mountainside impossible and any ache or pain is surely life threatening, or if not that, at least enough to stay bed ridden for a day or two, one has discovered a certain variety of woman. The type to avoid at all costs, the one for which the frail sex was named.

5) A modern city is like one huge living organism - all parts interacting in a seemingly chaotic fashion, but towards a unified end: that of continuance. An entity developed over time, evolved from the ebb and flow of experience and character, into the best that can be offered in relation to current environments. In this it must be said that the Ast'r spirit has made this a possibility: for what other Volk have pushed the limits of the believable and the fathomable time and again? It is in the Ast'r Volkish nature to conquer and alter his environment to best suit the sameness in all of us must be glorified and the small and necessarily superficial differences must be seen through and beyond. Dutch or Frisian? What does it matter: all are the same Volk and culture. Norwegian or Swedish: the same rule applies. English or Irish, of Scottish or Germanic or Slavic descent: and again the same rule applies. In relation to the other pigmented tribes of the world, we are all European, or offshoots thereof, and rather than belittle ourselves by highlighting paltry differences, we should extol and exalt our unique bonds and sameness - for only by doing that will it remain possible to maintain the very reason for celebration.

7) Strong willed and intelligent people of both sexes, when looking for a mate, should seek an equal and complimentary partner. It is always rutting season, and one must remain awake at all times: power attracts power, beauty attracts beauty, fitness attracts fitness, and intellect is drawn towards intellect. Choose only with these characteristics in mind: by following one's own path, and pushing forward at all costs, one will not only leave the competitors of one's own sex behind, but will attract the very ones sought after from the other. For it is not about searching for a mate, but simply about selecting the proper match from the bees swarming around the honey pot.

8) A man should use proper judgment within whom and when he spreads his seed. Casual copulations notwithstanding, he should wisely choose and select with care the receptacle of his agent. This woman should be one of healthy stock, clean complexion, solid constitution and right mind. And measures should not be carried out in order to prevent impregnation, but rather to induce it - to cleave the egg with the most promising sperm to be offered.

9) For what good does it do to always gaze into the past of the glorious days of former civilizations, of great men and their deeds? These days are no longer: all that concerns us is the present and more importantly, the future. We may take lessons from the past, and examples, but those things that make up history are unique to their particular times and places - they will never be replicated. Therefore, the greatest error is to attempt to recreate that which was rooted in another place and time. These actions are ultimately doomed to failure. But most humans cannot rise above the backwards gazing somnambulism.

They view the past as a goal to attain for the future, and so are condemned to repeat and repeat and repeat... If one is only aware of what is presented to him from a gaze into the past, then they will find it impossible to go forward. One cannot progress while walking in reverse. A seemingly perverse yet honest logic dictates that running forward blindly is better than walking while seeing backwards. Indeed, the prize goes to the brave, to those who risk... For even if one falls off the impending cliff, at least they have met a respectable end and not an ignorant one. And eventually, enough of the future minded ones, enough runners, shouting warnings to their comrades, and shedding light where it is deemed necessary, will plot a new course that will be both forward looking and free of pitfalls and false ends.

And what great Avatara, dipping his hands into the entrails of a disemboweled world, and discerning from the roasting bones, could not evoke a vision and fulfill the very prophecy spoke thereof? And that shall be the beauty of it: for him who sees what needs to be done to be the same being who acts upon it. And not merely as a messenger, but as an actor participating in the cataclysmic finale. For ultimately, in place of bringing things around again to the start, he would provide, for those who remained, a grand new script.

"The Conqueror Manifesto: Capricornus Teitan". by Peter G. Helmkamp

In the spirit of Crowley's "Book of the Law", Nietzsche's "Antichrist", and Redbeard's "Might is Right", "The Conqueror Manifesto" hails the Self-Will as Father of All. Through the heightening of the two Creative attributes of Strength & Wisdom, "The Conqueror Manifesto details how humankind can embark on the Quest towards the Plateau of Invincibility and attain Godhood (Homodeus). This process - termed Heretic Supremacy - is fully elaborated with Philosophical, Occultural and Historical examples. In addition,

Historical perspectives on various Judeo-christian myths, the relevance of amoral 'eye for an eye' ethics on modern day society, and numerous other 'forbidden' topics, fully complete this work. Written at the end of the 20th Century, "The Conqueror Manifesto" appears to be either the last gasp of an ancient glorious era, or the threshold to an even greater Age. Will we engender the fierce spirit? Only the next century will tell...
